Maldives Pres emphasizes significance of Commonwealth for the nation

Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has sent a message of felicitations on the occasion of this year’s Commonwealth Day.

In his message, he expressed that the Commonwealth is an important partner for Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives, and acknowledged that it has been a strong advocate for climate action, increased and simplified access to finance, gender equality, increased trade, and building resilience, all of which are significantly important, especially to the Maldives.

The president reflected on the Maldives' journey with the Commonwealth.

"As we also commemorate the Commonwealth’s 75th anniversary this year, we are reminded of how far we have come together. Our unified efforts have helped place people at the heart of sustainable development. It has helped us address and overcome our vulnerabilities. It has pushed us to deliver on our shared commitments. We are truly at an advantage when we work together in unison," the message further read.

The president expressed gratitude for the Commonwealth’s commitment to finding solutions to shared challenges in the lead-up to, during, and beyond the Commonwealth Heads of the Government Meeting in Samoa later this year. He reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to working within the Commonwealth family to explore new ways to address common challenges.

The Maldives rejoined the Commonwealth on February 1, 2020.
