Free Trade Agreement to be established between Maldives and Türkiye

The Maldives and Türkiye are in the process of formulating a Free Trade Agreement, with the first round of discussions taking place in the Maldives on Wednesday.

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu initiated efforts to establish this free trade agreement during discussions with Türkiye officials on his inaugural trip abroad to Türkiye after assuming the presidency.

“The two countries are currently working on a free trade agreement with some special terms specified by both parties,” he said.

President Dr. Muizzu has been maintaining close relations with Türkiye since taking office. Türkiye recently donated three surveillance drones to monitor the Maldives' waters, while a one-year agreement has been signed to import staple foods to the Maldives from Türkiye. The Türkiye government has also increased scholarship opportunities to the Maldives, while efforts are also ongoing to establish a Türkiye embassy in the Maldives.
