Pres Dr. Muizzu pledges ambitious development for Addu City, aims to match Male' standards

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that he wishes to develop southernmost Addu City to the stature of the capital, Male' City.

Meeting Addu City's residents on Friday night, President Dr. Muizzu underscored his government's vision to develop certain regions of the country to Male's standards. He outlined plans to develop the four southernmost atolls with Addu City as the primary hub of the region, mirroring the same features as Male' City. He also revealed that the government hopes to develop the four northernmost atolls similarly, alongside the development of seven urban centers in central Maldives.

The president said overall sustainable development of the country cannot be achieved without equitable development akin to Male'. The hopes of the people of Addu City will be realized when Addu City is developed in accordance with the government's policy, he said.

The President noted that previous governments implemented major projects at the end of their terms. Contrary to this approach, the current government aims to get a head start by initiating major projects early in the term, aiming to expedite progress without wasting time, he said.

Speaking regarding the bridge project linking Addu City's Hithadhoo and Hulhumeedhoo, the president said the project would kick off within the year, with the objective of completion within the term. He noted that the bridge survey had been completed and one-third of the design had already been completed. He emphasized that the bridge would be an important means of bringing development to Addu City.

The President further said the government was exploring ways to introduce new airlines to Addu City in order to boost tourism in the area. Efforts are also underway to increase the number of flights operated to Addu City by Sri Lankan Airlines, he added. Meanwhile, preparations are also underway to commence the Coastal Tourism Project and the previously planned Hankende project, he revealed. He added that some of the roads built in Addu City are subpar and will therefore be reconstructed.

The President urged support for the PPM-PNC candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections. He emphasized the need for the government to win a clear majority in parliament to carry out the major projects announced and launched by the government in the past four months. The President reiterated that if the government failed to attain a parliament majority, its efforts for development would be impeded.

President Dr. Muizzu reiterated his commitment to sincere governance, highlighting the weight of responsibility inherent in governing a country, The government wishes to continue work without delaying any project and without wasting any time, he stressed.
