Local salt production contract awarded to BCC

The local production of salt in the Maldives has been contracted to Business Center Corporation (BCC).

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said the government is working with UNDP to conduct a study on the matter.

Saeed emphasized the government's commitment to swift action.

"With God's grace, we will do this work within our five year term," Saeed said.

The minister highlighted that the Maldives has a vast sea area, and that the government would explore ways to best utilize the resource. While it is possible to produce salt in the Maldives, the goal is to produce enough salt locally to meet the needs of the Maldivian market, he said.

Saeed, who also served as Economic Minister under former President Abdullah Yameen, had previously discussed the potential for salt production in the Maldives, although no practical steps were taken at that time.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government is making efforts to reduce the Maldivian economy’s heavy reliance on tourism by exploring and developing new areas of business and commerce.
