20th Parliament rejects amendment to Land Act

The 20th Parliament today rejected the 19th Parliament's amendment to the Land Act.

The bill, initially submitted by MDP MP Meekail Naseem and passed on April 29th, stipulated that the government would need to hand over residential land to recipients within three months from the date the permanent list of recipients is publicized. However, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu returned the amendment to Parliament last month, requesting reconsideration, after the 19th parliamentary assembly had concluded its term.

During today's parliamentary sitting, the 20th Parliament debated the President's request for reconsideration. While 12 members voted in favor of sending the bill back to the committee, 75 members voted against it. One member abstained from voting.

While 12 members voted in favor of approving the Land Act Amendment Bill without further amendments, 76 members voted against it. One member abstained from voting.
