The third meeting of the US-Maldives Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council took place on Friday in Washington, DC.
The meeting was attended by the Maldives’ Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, US Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch and several senior officials of both countries.
A joint statement issued following the meeting highlighted discussions on further expanding economic ties and exploring additional investment opportunities. The Maldives presented its President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s economic policy and appealed to provide all possible cooperation.
Key topics discussed during the meeting included intellectual property protection and enforcement, leveraging international platforms and payment systems for digital content creators, artists and merchants. The discussions also covered workers’ rights, digital trade and environmental issues.
Additionally, the Maldives government discussed the country’s economic reforms and efforts to improve the business environment to increase trade and encourage investment.
Last month, Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer also visited the United States for similar discussions.
