MDP Chairperson attributes by-election loss to low voter turnout

The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has said there is no reason for MDP to be disappointed with the results of the local council by-elections held Saturday, citing low voter turnout. Fayyaz made the remark in a post on social media platform X.

The Election Commission (EC) organized Saturday's by-election for three vacant constituencies in the Male City Council, a vacant seat in the Kulhudhuffushi Council, and to elect a President for the F. Biledhdhoo Council. Despite MDP candidates participating, the ruling Peoples' National Congress (PNC) emerged victorious, securing all contested seats.

Speaking regarding the by-election, Fayyaz emphasized that the low turnout was a factor in the results. Fayyaz expressed gratitude to the MDP candidates for their courage and efforts, and highlighted that the party has promising days ahead as it focuses on strengthening its management.
