Speaker emphasizes Parliament's commitment to uphold constitutional duties

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has assured that the Parliament will fulfill its constitutional duties.

Speaking at Wednesday's Parliament sitting, which coincided with the 16th anniversary of the adoption of the current Green Constitution, Abdul Raheem emphasized the Parliament's commitment to its responsibilities.

“I assure the citizens of the Maldives that this Parliament will fulfill its responsibility to ensure our rights under the Constitution and to hold the institutions accountable,” he stated.

The current Green Constitution was drafted over four years by the constitutional assembly — the People's Special Majlis. The constitution was passed by the Special Majlis on June 26, 2008, and ratified by then-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on August 7, 2008.

During the session, Abdul Raheem expressed gratitude to the members of the Special Majlis who drafted the Constitution and to the Speaker of the Assembly, Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim, who presided over the process.
