Maldives reaffirms support for China’s 'One China' policy

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has reaffirmed the Maldives' full support for China’s "One China" policy during his ongoing visit to China.

Abdul Raheem is in China to attend the 2024 International Seminar on the Achievement of the SDGs for Parliaments of Developing Countries.

Speaking at the seminar, Abdul Raheem emphasized the strong and longstanding relationship between the Maldives and China, which dates back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972. He attributed the well-maintained relationship to China's One China Policy. The Maldives wishes to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries, he said.

Abdul Raheem highlighted China's significant role in the development of the Maldives, including the development of the Sinamale Bridge linking Male-Hulhule-Hulhumale and the development of Velana International Airport. He also acknowledged Chinese President Xi Jinping's efforts to foster bilateral relations with other countries and expressed his gratitude for the efforts.

Abdul Raheem noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's maiden visit to China in January this year was highly successful. He reaffirmed that the Maldives will always work closely with China, he said.
