The practical work of developing the Agricultural Economic Zone will start later this year, Economc Minister Mohamed Saeed has said.
The zone, to be developed in Uthuru Thila Falhu, is part of a $250 million project awarded to China's Harbor Engineering Company Limited.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference held at the President’s Office, the minister said the transfer of AgroNet operations under the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone would significantly boost the agricultural sector. The minister added that the integration is the most beneficial option for farmers, providing them with more convenience and benefits.
"This initiative will also generate substantial income from agriculture," Minister Saeed stated.
The minister emphasized that the government is focused on creating agricultural zones in both the northern and southern regions of the Maldives.
The Agricultural Economic Zone project is the largest of its kind to be undertaken in the Maldives, the minister said. He added that 15 types of vegetables and fruits commonly used in the Maldives will be produced in the zone.
