President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that the essence of the Maldivian government’s policies are rooted in the desire of its people to remain free and independent. He made the statement while addressing at a special ceremony held on the occasion of the National Day.
In his speech, the president reflected on the Maldives’ historical struggle against Portuguese enslavement and said Maldivians have always cherished freedom and are committed to preserving it.
The president highlighted the use of state-of-the-art aircraft with modern technology to safeguard Maldives borders is for this very reason. He emphasized that this was the primary reason that there are no foreign troops stationed in the Maldives today.
The president also said the history of the Maldives shows that foreign eyes always eye the Maldives, and noted that the Maldives have faced foreign aggression in the past. However, the Maldives have always resisted foreign attacks and overcome them, he noted. He pointed to historical artifacts such as the large guns in the national museum and the defensive wall built around Male’ by Bodu Rasgefaanu as symbols of the enduring efforts of Maldivians to protect their independence.
The president anlso emphasized the importance of the Maldivian seas and the sustenance it brings, and warned that if control over the seas is lost, it could lead to a famine. Therefore, it is important to instill a strong sense of national loyalty in the upcoming generations to ensure they remain steadfast in their commitment to Maldivian land, he said.
