Gov’t to dismiss 228 political appointees

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to dismiss 228 political appointees as part of the administration’s efforts to cut government spending.

In a social media post, President Dr. Muizzu detailed the plan to remove the political appointees from their positions within the next 15 days. The dismissals will include seven state ministers, 43 deputy ministers, 109 senior political directors and 69 political directors. According to the President, the move is expected to save MVR 5.714 million from the state budget each month.

President Dr. Muizzu had pledged to limit the number of political appointees to under 700. However, critics claim the actual number of political positions in the government exceeds 2,000. Despite these criticisms, the government has not disclosed the total number of political posts, and has denied the claims.
