Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Mutthalib has stated that 37 projects at a total contract value of MVR 1.976 billion has been completed since the current administration took office in November 2023.
Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office on Monday, the minister provided the details on the completed projects.
Details of completed projects
Four port construction projects - MVR 238 million
One land reclamation project - MVR 91.4 million
One road construction project - MVR 79 million
Three beach protection projects -MVR 2.18 billion
29 water and sewerage projects - MVR 1.54 billion
The minister said an additional 21 projects will be completed by November 17, 2024. These include a port project, a land reclamation project, two road construction projects, nine water and sewerage projects, three beach protection projects, four port projects, and an airport project. The cumulative contract value of these projects is MVR 15 billion.
Minister Mutthalib said one of the most significant challenges in completing projects is the inadequate funds allocated for the previous government's projects in this year's budget. The minister noted that, according to the law, projects can only proceed to the extent that budgeted funds and available finances allow. He added that the previous government had signed 322 projects worth MVR 39.9 billion with the Infrastructure Ministry, with only MVR 3.6 billion allocated in this year's budget for these projects.
“The funding available is less than half of what’s necessary for 2024, amounting to only 15 to 20 percent,” he explained.
