Maldives to tighten laws against online gambling

Attorney General Ahmed Usham has announced plans to amend laws to curb online gambling via websites and apps.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office on Wednesday, AG Usham noted that gambling has become a widespread issue and said it can be addressed by amending the relevant laws.

Since July, under the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldivian government has been actively blocking gambling websites. The Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) also confirmed its efforts in this crackdown. However, specific details were not disclosed.

Despite being prohibited in Islam, online gambling remains common in the Maldives, and promotional activity can often be found on social media platforms.
