MP Hannan seeks withdrawal of controversial media control bill

Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru has requested to withdraw a bill submitted to the Parliament that proposed granting the government increased control over media organizations.

The bill was introduced to the Parliament, and its first reading took place on November 13. The bill sought to establish a commission with four members appointed by the President and three members representing the media, giving the government a majority. The bill also gives the President the power to appoint the President and the Vice President of the commission.

The controversial bill has drawn criticism, particularly from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Speaking to the media, MP Hannan said he proposed to withdraw the bill as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has clearly asserted that the bill is inconsistent with government policies. Hannan said the bill cannot be passed without the support of the ruling PNC MPs.

The government has clarified that the bill was not officially sponsored by the administration, as it was submitted independently.

Addressing public concerns on X, President Dr. Muizzu also emphasized his commitment to media freedom.

“Every citizen shall have the right to do whatever he wants with his own freedom in the territory of the sovereignty of the Maldivian State as long as it does not violate the holy religion of Islam and the Constitution of the Maldives,” he said.
