Proposed constitutional amendments referred to Whole House Committee

Maldives' Parliament has referred proposed constitutional amendments to the Committee of the Whole House for review.

The amendments, introduced by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid on behalf of the government, include seeking a referendum to decide whether a referendum should be required for significant constitutional amendments, as well as measures to disqualify MPs who switch parties.

The resolution was accepted by the Parliament with 69 members voted in favor and 12 members against. The Parliament decided to refer the matter to the Committee of the Whole House with 71 votes in its favor and 12 against.
