The Parliament has approved a budget of MVR 56.6 billion for 2025.
The budget, presented to Parliament on October 31, exceeds the previous year's proposed budget by MVR 1.6 billion. It includes a projected deficit of MVR 9.4 billion, with expected revenue and grants totaling MVR 39.8 billion, against an expenditure of MVR 49.2 billion.
The Parliament's Budget Committee had earlier approved the budget on the condition that the details of the budget be provided by the government. However, a ruling PNC MP, Husnee Mubarak proposed to withdraw the committee's recommendations, a motion which was supported by Vilimale MP Mohamed Ismail. The motion was passed with 68 votes in favour, and 11 members against.
Subsequently, the budget was passed with 70 votes in favor, while 11 opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members voted against it.
