Maldives Police Service (MPS) has called on the public to share any information that may be helpful to the investigation on the wrongful plot allocations under the Binveriyaa Scheme.
In a post on X, MPS encouraged citizens to use a designated portal to upload any relevant information or evidence related to the case. The police said information could be shared anonymously or with contact details for follow-up.
‘We assure you that the anonymity of those who share information will be maintained with utmost confidentiality,’ the police stated.
The corruption surrounding the Binveriyaa Scheme came to light when individuals who are not recipients of land plots under the scheme applied for permits to build Binveriyaa land plots in Hulhumale’ using forged documentation. While the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) handles the issuance of these permits, the case became more controversial when it emerged that one of the individuals who applied for the permit was the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC)’s Deputy Managing Director Fazeel Rasheed, who is also the brother of HDC’s Managing Director until now, Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed.
When the case emerged, the entire board of HDC with the exception of its Chairperson, along with MD Fazul were suspended from the post. Fazul has since resigned from his role. Additionally, passports of 20 individuals with past or present links to HDC and Housing Ministry have been withheld.
While the Prosecutor General’s Office has ordered a thorough investigation into the case, relevant agencies have been asked to provide weekly updates on the case.
