Maldives Immigration has taken 23 foreign nationals into custody for residing in the Maldives unlawfully.
The Immigration conducted an operation in the local market area in Male’ City on Tuesday, in response to tip-offs submitted to the ‘Immigration Watch’. In the operation, officers inspected vessels docked at the market area harbour as well as departing and arriving vessels.
While a total of 148 foreigners were checked, 22 men and one woman who were found to be in the Maldives illegally were detained.
Over 5,000 foreigners who were residing in the Maldives in violation of Immigration laws have been deported since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office in November 2023. The government has pledged to address issues related to illegal foreigners over the next three years.
