Van Oord dredgers arrive in Maldives

Dredger from Netherland's Van Oord has arrived in the Maldives to begin land reclamation projects in three islands.

Speaking to Avas, Housing Ministry's Media Consultant Ahmed Fazal Hussain said the dredger will carry out land reclamation projects in GDh. Thinadhoo, S. Feydhoo and K. Hinmafushi. He added the project will begin latest by next Tuesday.

Under the project, 53 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Thinadhoo. Additionally, 1852 meter breakwater will be created to protect the coast. Fifty hectares of land will be reclaimed in Feydhoo, with a 1680 meter breakwater. In Hinmafushi, 21.6 hectares of land will be reclaimed and an 890 meter breakwater will be constructed as well.

The project is expected to be completed within 14 months at a cost of MVR 603.7 million. Van Oord is the company that had reclaimed land in Dubai's Palm Island.
