President Abdulla Yameen

President was cooperative when questioned: ACC

The Anti Corruption Commission of Maldives has questioned President Yaameen, regarding the MMPRC scandal, the biggest scandal that has been unveiled up to date.

Many suspect that the President was also involved in the MMPRC scandal along with former Managing Director Abdullah Ziyath and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb. The Vice President of the ACC Muavviz Rasheed has told Avas online that President Yameen had been questioned regarding the MMPRC scandal within the last month. Muavviz stated that the president gave his full cooperation, however he did not reveal the exact nature of the questions asked.

"The ACC has questioned President Yaameen, and the president gave us his full cooperation" Muavviz said.

Sources say that the president was questioned about a transaction that a company involved in the MMPRC scandal had made to his personal account in the Islamic Bank. Photos of the alleged cheque used to make the transaction have also been circulating around social media.

"No evidence tying the president to the MMPRC scandal"

The President has replied to the allegations saying that he was involved in the biggest scandal uncovered in the Maldives up to date. The President has said that there were no documents or physical evidence which shows that the money had indeed been transferred to his account or the First Lady's. The President has said that even if the money had been given to him or to PPM via other methods, there would be some sort of physical evidence or links showing how the money was transferred. The President also said that there were no documents showing the alleged transactions.

"The money that was misappropriated from MMPRC has been transferred to the accounts of the people who were involved in this scandal. Allegations saying that the money was transferred to me, the First Lady or to the party are all baseless accusations. If in fact the money was transferred to any of the mentioned accounts, reports prepared by the Auditor General and the ACC would show a paper trail or some sort of physical evidence" the President said.

The President said that the main reason the MMPRC scandal got out of hand was because the company had worked with former VP Adeeb while he was running the Tourism ministry. The President said that at that time, independent bodies which monitored such situations had faced significant barriers, hence why it was allowed to continue for so long.
