Parliament session halted over debate on dates, hajj quota

Today's Parliament session has been halted shortly after debate began on the amendment to the Tourism Act.

Sharp words were exchanged between ruling coalition members and opposition members, when some opposition MPs brought out the issue of Hajj quota and Saudi donated dates.

The amendment was proposed by Majority Leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik. The two MDP MPs who had debated on the amendment, MP Ibrahim Shareef and MP Rozaina Adam, had opposed the amendment.

The two MPs had said that the amendment will only legalize corruption in the country, adding the lease of resorts without bidding cannot be accepted.

The amendment proposed by the Government shows significant changes to the lease procedures of the resorts, including introduction of US$ 6 as green taxes for guesthouses.
