The amendment on dismissing land taxes for first time flat owners has been sent to the Parliament Committee on National Development.
The amendment to the land act was proposed by Funadhoo Constituency MP Ali Saleem and was passed by the unanimous vote of the 53 members who took part in the vote. Following this, the amendment was sent tot he Parliament Committee.
The amendment states that if the buyer of the flat was 18 years old and if this is the first time buying the flat then the tax payable to the Government can be dismissed. The amendment also stated that this was applicable even if there was a land registered to the buyer.
The Parliament deliberated on the motion for three hours, with MPs of PPM and JP supporting the motion. Though some MPs of MDP had supported the motion, they had strong criticisms of current taxation principles.
Speaking in the session MP Mariya Ahmed Didi said she supported the bill on principle but had no faith over Government intentions on such bills. She said while taxes on flats were being eliminated, there were additional taxes introduced on the citizens.
Responding to this, PPM MPs had said the amendment will undergo additional review within the Committee stage and this amendment will seek to provide housing to all citizens.
