Supreme Court upholds Murrath death penalty verdict

Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty verdict issued by Criminal Court on Murrath of M. Masrooraage, over the first degree murder charges of lawyer Ahmed Najeeb in 2012.

Supreme Court had issued the verdict in the trial held to determine whether the verdict issued by Criminal Court and upheld by High Court was a just verdict.

This is the last legal avenue for Murrath. Changing the verdict is now at the discretion of the next of kin, even the President cannot change the verdict. This is the second time the death penalty verdict was issued - the first one was issued on Hussain Humam of H. Lobby, on the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

The death penalty was last implemented in 1953 on an individual suspected of having performed black magic to assassinate former President Mohamed Ameen.
