Mohamed Asim appointed as Foreign Minister

President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has appointed Dr. Mohamed Asim as Foreign Minister. Dr. Asim was serving as Ambassador to Bangladesh.

Supreme Court Judge Abdullah Areef swore in Dr. Asim to his position in a ceremony held in President's Office. In addition serving as Ambassador to Bangladesh, he had served as Ambassador to other nations and filled various positions in Foreign Ministry.

The position has been vacant since his predecessor Dunya Maumoon abruptly resigned her position. In a statement released following this, Dunya said she had resigned following differences of opinion with the Government over implementation of death penalty.

The Cabinet had undergone various shuffles in the past few weeks, with Umar Naseer resigning from his position as Home Minister. The position is now filled by former Youth Minister Ahmed Zuhoor.

Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim had been appointed as Health Minister, while his predecessor Irthisham Adam has been changed to Youth Ministry.
