- Delayed over Democracy Network review
- Requested a change in part of the law
- Order in effect until review is over
High Court today had issued a temporary stay order on implementing the death penalty. The decree was passed after the case was filed in Court by Maldivian Democracy Network, which had requested to nullify aspects of the law on implementing death penalty.
The Network had called to nullify clauses eight to 17 of the death penalty act as it conflicted the terms in clause 16 of the Constitution.
The High Court ruling stated that until Democracy Network review was completed, the state had to delay implementing death penalty. The decision was unanimously agreed on by the whole bench.
The state had already sentenced Hussain Humam for the first degree murder of late Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, as well as Murrath for the murder of lawyer Ahmed Najeeb.
