Police begins investigation on opposition fund for arrestees

Hassan Latheef said the Police viewed this fund as a hamper on running the state and implementing the rule of law. He also said their phones had been confiscated by the Police under a court order.

Adhaalath Party's Foreign Relations Committee Chair Shidhaathaa Shareef, former MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and former Youth Minister Hassan Latheef were summoned to Police. The three hold prominent positions in the opposition's shadow cabinet. They were summoned to the Police on charges of obstruction of duties.

Speaking to press afterward, Thasmeen said that they were summoned for questioning on the fund and that they had fully cooperated. He said the fund was proposed as an assistance to those arrested in peaceful political protests, adding that he did not see this as a major issue.

Hassan Latheef said the Police viewed this fund as a hamper on running the state and implementing the rule of law. He also said their phones had been confiscated by the Police under a court order.

The opposition had pledged MVR 1000 for every individual arrested in protests, while MVR 5000 will be given to any individual jailed. The fund will also disburse finances to treat medical bills of those individuals injured in the protests.
