Committee passes Gender Equality Bill

Parliament Committee of Social Affairs has passed the Gender Equality bill.

The bill proposed by the Government was submitted to the Parliament by Maafannu Central MP Asma Rasheed. It was passed with some amendments with six MPs of the Committee voting in favor of the bill. The Bill had been in Parliament Committee review for about a year and now has been sent to the Parliament floor.

Gender Equality bill seeks to provide all rights enshrined in the Constitution irrespective of gender and to eliminate all bias against women, as specified in the international covenants on elimination of gender based violations on women. The bill seeks to provide equal opportunities for women on economic, social, cultural and political fields.

It is expected that this bill will be passed before the Parliament goes to recess later this month.
