Former President Mohamed Nasheed and MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed has departed Sri Lanka today.
It has been confirmed that the two departed today after a week's stay in the country. Maldives United Opposition (MUO) had said discussions in Sri Lanka had centered around overthrowing the Government. It was rumored that MUO's Leader and former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed was also scheduled to be in Sri Lanka during this time, but had remained in London.
During this time, BBC had reported that in the coming days the Opposition will stage a coup to remove the Government. However, reports had surfaced that Nasheed had not met any diplomats during his stay.
Criminal Court had issued a arrest warrant for Nasheed in this period as well. Sri Lanka had said that they had no concerns over Nasheed's stay in Sri Lanka, adding their activities were tied to democracy.
