Japan gifts MVR425 mln to Maldives for digital broadcasting network

Japan decided to gift MVR415 million to the Maldives to establish a digital terrestrial network in the Maldives.

The agreement to receive the aid was signed Thursday by the Foreign Minister Dr Mohamed Asim at an event held in the Foreign Ministry. Signing on behalf of Japan was Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Kazumi Endo.

This aid was given to improve the current Japanese ISDB-T system used in the Maldives, by establishing a digital terrestrial TV broadcasting network in the system. This project will oversee the establishment of the system in Maldives, and also the establishment of the antennas,towers and everything required by the network operating centers.

This program will make broadcasting in the Maldives infinitely easier and it will see a modern digital television network established. The Japanese government state that this is something that will bring civil and economical development in the Maldives.

Japan had previously decided to also provide aid for the transportation of old radio towers in Male' to Thilafushi. The 50.8 million given for that task is designated to be used to buy modern transmitters, RF equipment and audio test equipment, and to develop a site on Thilafushi for this project.
