Motorbike taxi law gazetted

The law compiled by the Economic Ministry regarding motorbike taxi's has been gazetted. This will begin the service of motorbike taxi's in the Maldives.

The law states that only motorbikes registered to a taxi company with a license provided by the government can give service, and that all riders must have a license under this law.

The Economic Ministry inform that only companies registered correctly under the trade registration law and have proved that they can introduce a minimum of 20 motorbikes for the service will receive the license.

Each license will be valid up to five years, and each company will have a three month time period in which to renew their license. A fine of MVR100 will be issued to the companies which fail to renew the license within three months of expiration.

There are some guidelines to providing this service, including the wearing of helmets and other safety precautions, communicating with the passengers in a respectable way. No passenger can be denied a ride without a valid reason.
