PPM crisis

'Pres Yameen integral to ruling party inception'

Crisis-hit ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Sunday hailed incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as one of the key architects behind the inception of the party.

In a statement, PPM said its chief adviser and current leader Yameen has worked hard to develop the party, winning elections and constantly bringing in new members.

It also said that the party approves of the things that President Yameen has done for the party, and as result the party will always support President Yameen's decisions.

"Within around two years of the party's inception, the people elected the party's presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen as the President. PPM sees this as the hard work of it's general members. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is the one who first started work on the creation of this party," the statement read in a clear message to ousted leader and Yameen's half brother Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The statement denied rumours that support was fading for President Yameen within the party, saying that the party council, parliamentary group, committees, wings and in general the entire party still supports President Yameen, and that the party will back whichever direction the current government takes.

Some members of the Parliament group of the party also denied the rumours that the party was about to lose it's parliament majority.
