Maldives cannery to add ice plant after fishermen protest

State run Felivaru Fisheries Complex Ltd announced plans to start work on an additional ice plant at its tuna cannery in the island of Felivaru in Lhaviyani atoll next week, hours after local fishermen staged a protest demanding better facilities at the complex.

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) which runs the complex in a statement Tuesday said the decision to establish an additional ice plant was made as fishermen are faced with increasing difficulties to obtain ice.

The statement said the ice plant would be up and running by the end of the month.

MIFCO also said its management had met with some fishermen to discuss their concerns and had decided to review its present operational policies.

Around 14 fishing vessels had staged a protest near Felivaru as the government announced a slash in fuel prices for fishermen.
