The former staff of the now defunct Haveeru newspaper has re-appealed the court imposed media ban as the appellate court had thrown out the earlier appeal after their lawyer failed to show up in court.
Civil Court had concluded a legal dispute over the ownership of Haveeru and associated media, barring the staff of Haveeru Media Group from working at any media outlet in the country for two years.
Four former employees had appealed the ruling which was subsequently thrown by the High Court after their lawyer, former Attorney General Husnu Suood failed to show up for a key hearing.
The court however, had accepted the second appeal.
The two year ban on the staff was imposed in the final verdict of the ownership lawsuit who worked for Haveeru from this February.
The judge invoked a maxim in Islamic jurisprudence on preventing damage to justify the ban.
He also ordered the home ministry, the broadcasting commission, and other state institutions to take action against former staff working at other media organisations within seven days upon request by the majority shareholders.
