Parliament rejects move to annul doodled ballots

Parliament Tuesday rejected a government proposed amendment to the elections law seeking to annul doodled and scribbled ballots cast during elections.

During Tuesday's sitting 43 lawmakers voted down the amendment after it was back by even the opposition parliamentarians during the debate stage.

Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi who had proposed the amendment had argued that the move was designed to ensure the anonymity of voters which could be compromised with doodles and scribbles on ballot papers.

Despite the backing of opposition lawmakers the government controlled parliament voted down the amendment.
