Govt provides shelter for warehouse fire victims

Government has provided temporary shelter for the 20 people displaced in the warehouse fire in capital Male on Monday.

The fire broke-out in a warehouse in Kafidhoo house in Machchangoalhi ward on Monday morning which quickly spread to nearby buildings, engulfing the whole area in thick smoke. Firefighters eventually put out the fire around two hours later.

Disaster management centre's project director Hisaan Hassan told Avas that 26 people had originally been placed in guesthouses around Male after the fire.

However, after a safety assessment of the building half a dozen people had been allowed to return to their homes, Hisaan said.

The warehouse has completely burned down and the building has begun to collapsed.

The fire will reportedly cause a loss of MVR 40 million to Brotherhood, the company that owned the warehouse.
