Maldives immigration clampdown on 'fake' medicals for expats

Maldives immigration has looked to clampdown on present regulations after warning that fake medicals have been issued for expatriate workers suffering from contagious diseases.

Under the work visa regulations, expats are required to submit a medical certificate based on a health screen when applying for visa.

Immigration department has now tightened the regulation and decided to accept medical certificates from the state run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) refusing health screens from the privately run ADK hospital and private clinic AMDC.

In a statement announcing the new regulation, immigration said an investigation has been launched with the assistance of the police into complaints of forged medical certificates.

"The department would not hesitate to take any action in order to ensure the safety and security of the public," the statement read.

The last census numbered expatriate workers at 124,000 with an additional 15,000 reportedly undocumented.
