- Goals are being met
- Target is to improve the quality of service
- Improve medical permit guidelines
Health Minister Abdulla Nazeem on Tuesday said the first major goal for the Maldivian medical sector has been achieved, and that progress was ongoing towards the second goal, which is to increase the quality in the service given by medical providers.
Speaking on Tuesday at the initiating ceremony for the workshop to train medical workers to provide a higher quality of service, the Minister said that an internal and external quality assurance would be established after the completion of the workshop.
"The biggest purpose of this discussion is to register the current medical service providers in the Maldives, to establish basic guidelines for the medical licenses and to create a national accreditation system," the Minister said.
The Minister noted the success the medical sector has recently seen, such as many diseases being completely wiped out from the Maldives and the reduction in the mortality rates of mothers during childbirth. He also said a medical service provider and pharmacy will now be readily available in all inhabited areas of the Maldives.
He also spoke on 'Aasandha' a system through which healthcare is provided to Maldivian citizens free of charge.
The Minister stated that it would be impossible for the medical sector to gain the trust of the public while providing a mediocre service. He pointed out that the government had spent large sums to improve the medical industry in both the public and private sectors.
The purpose of this two day workshop is to train monitors to observe the level of medical service currently provided in the Maldives, and to devise ways through which to lead the service to higher quality standards.
Two doctors from the World Health Organisation are also taking part in this effort, along with over 80 participants who attended the workshop from Male' and all around the Maldives.
