Support ruling party, not individuals, urges Maldives pres

President Abdulla Yameen has stated that the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) must not revolve around one certain person, but that everyone must work together for the betterment of the party.

He also called for the unity of all party members.

Speaking at Ga. Villingili, President Yameen said that change must occur along with the progression of time, and that this is not a reason for disputes or chaos within the community. The President said that changes were being made in how the government is run to cater to the wishes of the youth.

He also said that he would not allow PPM to be split because of disputes within the party, saying that work had to be done to further strengthen the party.

"We have to support an ideology, because people will change. We cannot always be with the same people, but we must always follow the same ideology," the President said.

The President said that his strongest desire was to establish unity. He said that the next presidential elections can only be won by strengthening the unity within the party.

"If you support the PPM ideology, work towards that ideology, there is no benefit in revolving around certain individuals, there are figures we believe in, but we can only stand behind those figures if the example they show confirms that they are figures worth following," the President said.

The President also called other parties to step up and be responsible. He said that running a political party does not mean lighting fires or not voting for the budget. He also said that he would accept honest criticism.
