Maldives replaces doctor to resume health services in island

Health ministry has replaced the Pakistani doctor who 'fled' from Dhangethi island and resumed health services in the island.

The island council president had told 'Avas' that the foreign doctor had left for the capital Male saying he was leaving for one day. However, once he failed to arrive and a slight investigation revealed he had gone back to his country.

Without the only doctor in the island, residents had been left helpless.

The council president said the replacement doctor arrived in the island on Wednesday and praised the health ministry for the swift action.

"The new doctor has now resumed health services. We're hoping that the new doctor would be a good one. We believe that we've got a replacement sooner than expected. We're really happy with that," council president Abdul Hannan said.

Hannan said the ministry had also given the green light for the health centre to seek a driver for the ambulance in the island.
