A Vaikaradhoo councilor informs that fish are dying in the Vaikaradhoo harbour, and said that this was caused by the fact that no measures were taken to maintain the water flow during the construction of the harbour.
Vaikaradhoo Council President Ibrahim Mohamed told 'Avas' that there was no water flow in the island harbour which had led to rising temperatures, killing the fish in the harbour.
"There is no water flow in the harbour. This is due to the way the harbour was constructed. So we are assuming that the temperature of the water at low tide is what caused the fish to die," Ibrahim said.
Ibrahim said that the fish started dying around 4:30pm Saturday. Octopus, shrimp and other sea animals had also been affected by this. He also said the water in the harbour had become 'polluted' by the decomposing fish.
"The fish have died and are floating in the harbor. The water is polluted. We have informed the Marine Research Center of this issue. They said that they could not test it here, and that it has to be sent abroad. We will fill a form and send it," Ibrahim said.
Ibrahim said that efforts will be made by the islanders to try and clean the water.
