Maldives exempts over MVR370 mln on taxes for resorts

Government last year exempted over MVR370 million on taxes for material brought in for resort construction as part of its plan to fast-track the completion of stalled resort projects, Maldives customs said Sunday.

According to Maldives Customs Service statistics, government had granted MVR378 million in tax exemption for material and goods brought in for resort construction worth over MVR3 billion.

The government had launched a special initiative to aid resorts near competition in a bid to boost bed capacity in the archipelago.

Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer had told Avas that priority would be given to expedite the opening of resorts that remain delayed due to minor hiccups.

He said the ministry had dispatched teams and the government would provide assistance to the resorts once the obstacles are identified.

As many as 20 resorts have been unveiled this year, while President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's elections manifesto had detailed plans to open 50 new resorts by the end of his term in 2018.
