Maldives' main bank has issued USD1 million for local travelers since it took over the sale of US dollars around two weeks ago.
Maldives central bank had handled the sale of US dollars during the busy festive period before handing it over to Bank of Maldives (BML) from January 7.
However, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) had jointly handled dollar sales until January 9.
BML had introduces an online portal to purchase up to USD 500 per traveling passenger.
Passengers can then simply collect their notes – after check-in – at the Bank’s dedicated collection area at Velana International Airport.
BML said the bank had sold USD1 million to 2,500 travelers during the time and had held a special ceremony at the airport to celebrate the feat.
Passengers departing from other international airports within the country will be able to pick up their dollars from the BML branch located closest to that airport.
Maldives Monetary Authority meanwhile had sold USD15.2 million to over 30,000 people before it handed over the service to the country's main bank.
