Expert warns Maldives over rising antibiotic misuse

After sharing information about three Maldivians who overused antibiotics, an experienced Sri Lankan doctor has called for the stop of antibiotic abuse in the Maldives.

Dr Aflah Sadikeen of Sri Lanka stated this while addressing the public in a seminar held at Hotel Jen by ADK Pharmaceuticals. The seminar was held held in coalition with renowned pharmaceutical company, Glenmark, with over 60 doctors working in the Maldives in attendance.

Dr Aflah is a doctor who numerous Maldivians have consulted with. At the seminar, he shared the story of three Maldivians who had to be treated for the overuse of antibiotics.

The doctor also said that many Maldivians request antibiotics on every trip to the doctor, and noted that the selling of antibiotics from pharmacies without prescriptions was also a present issue.

Dr Aflah also advised doctors to be more cautious when prescribing antibiotics.

ADK revealed that this was the first in line of such seminars, stating that further seminars will be held with more doctors in attendance.
