Maldives to revise criminal procedure Act

Government is looking to propose several amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act even before it officially comes into effect, Attorney General Mohamed Anil revealed Sunday.

Parliament last year had to delay the implementation of the Criminal Procedure Act until July.

Speaking after inaugurating a workshop to familiarize relevant state officials with the Act, the AG said the law requires several amendments before it comes into effect.

Some of those amendments have already been highlighted by state institutions, Anil added.

"We are reviewing the proposed amendments, in order to send those to the parliament as soon as possible," he explained.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham echoed the AG's comments insisting that some of the proposed amendments were pivotal to the effective implementation of the law.

"We've looked at potential problems which may arise once the law comes into effect and have duly forwarded the amendments to the AG's office," Bisham said.

The landmark law includes all procedures to be carried out in criminal cases before and during trial.
