Maldives govt to boost efforts to protect intellectual property

The protection of intellectual property is instrumental to economic growth in the Maldives, economic minister Mohamed Saeed said Monday.

Speaking during a ceremony to inaugurate a workshop to provide information to relevant stakeholders on copyright law and intellectual property rights, the minister pointed out that the protection of intellectual property was pivotal to sustained economic growth.

The workshop organized jointly by the economic ministry, Japanese government and the World Intellectual Property Organization would offer the chance for stakeholders to share their views on the matter, Saeed said.

The minister also vowed to establish a management association in collaboration with businessmen to strengthen the copyright sector in the Maldives.

The association would be mandated to protect the rights of original local products, he added.
