Opposition files speaker censure motion

Opposition on Wednesday has submitted a o-confidence motion against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Opposition parties have claimed that the motion was filed with signatures of 26 lawmakers while only 15 is the required number.

Parliament would now have three days to send the motion notice to lawmakers.

Government has continued to insist that it would thwart the opposition led move to pass a motion of no confidence.

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had made an unsuccessful attempt to push through a no-confidence motion against Maseeh backed by lawmakers from ousted ruling party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's faction last year.
