Speaker unfazed by censure motion

Parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh on Wednesday appeared unfazed by the opposition engineered move to oust him as he responded calmly to the censure motion filed hours earlier.

Opposition parties have claimed that the motion was filed with signatures of 26 lawmakers while only 15 is the required number.

In addition to main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the motion has been backed by a few government lawmakers loyal to ousted ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and former government coalition partner Jumhoory Party (JP).

Speaking to reporters after a joint parliamentary group sit-down between PPM, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Maseeh only said "everything will be alright."

The seasoned lawmaker seemed unfazed by the third attempt by the opposition to push through a no confidence motion.

Government meanwhile had expressed confidence of defeating the move, alleging that the politically motivated motion was designed for the personal political gain of a few.
