Ruling party axes lawmaker loyal to Gayoom

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) disciplinary committee on Sunday decided to ax Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim’s (colloquially knows as “lawyer Wadde”) from the party.

The party sent a summon to Waheed last Wednesday regarding a disciplinary complaint that was submitted to the party’s council. However, Waheed did not responded to the summon, nor did he show up for the meeting, the party claimed.

According to PPM, the five-members present on Wednesday’s disciplinary committee meeting had collectively decided to withdraw Waheed’s membership from the party in absentia.

Speaking to Avas, a PPM disciplinary committee member said that Waheed’s involvement with PPM’s ousted leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in deposing the parliament speaker Ahmed Maseeh was aggravating factor for his dismissal from the party.

Waheed has now been notified of his dismissal via a letter, the party informed. Waheed will also be given the opportunity to appeal the disciplinary committee’s decision.

Waheed was not immediately available for comment.

Recently, PPM had also withdrawn the membership of its president’s son and Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon for going against a party whip-line in the parliament. However, Faris continues to use the PPM brand and acting on behalf of the party.
