Police have arrested a local man in suspicion of sexually abusing a boy in Laamu Atoll Milandhoo island.
Police spokesperson said Wednesday that the 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and has been remanded for 15 days until further investigation.
Police did not disclose any further information on the matter.
The gender ministry made a statement on Thursday, revealing that it had received 118 complains in May out of which most complaints were reports of child sexual abuse.
In 2009, Maldives established it's first toll-free, 24-hour child help line.
In an effort to combat child sexual abuse, the ministry also runs a child sex offenders registry on its’ official website.
